SPDs can be classified into voltage switching type, voltage limiting type, and combination type based on their operating principles.

Voltage switching SPDs maintain high impedance under normal conditions, but when they detect instantaneous overvoltage, their impedance rapidly shifts to low, allowing lightning current to pass through. This is why they are often referred to as "short-circuit switching SPDs."

Voltage limiting SPDs also start with high impedance in the absence of overvoltage. However, as surge current and voltage increase, their impedance decreases, exhibiting strong nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. They are sometimes called "clamp type SPDs."

Combined SPDs integrate both voltage switching and voltage limiting components, allowing them to display characteristics of either or both types, depending on the voltage characteristics they encounter.
