By the 1920s, various types of surge protectors, including aluminum, oxide film, and shot-type designs, began to be utilized. The 1930s saw the introduction of tubular surge protectors, while silicon carbide lightning arresters emerged in the 1950s.
In the 1970s, metal oxide surge protectors were developed, which not only mitigated overvoltage from lightning in power systems but also addressed overvoltage due to system operations. Since 1992, the 35mm guide rail plug-in SPD lightning protection modules from countries like Germany and France have been introduced to the Chinese market.
