The type of fuse selected depends largely on the protective characteristics of the load and the magnitude of the short circuit current. For low power motors and lighting branch circuits, fuses are normally used to provide overload and short-circuit protection. It is therefore necessary to select fuses with a suitably low melt index, usually the RQA series of fuses with lead-tin alloy melts. For larger capacity motors and lighting trunks, emphasis should be placed on short circuit protection and breaking capacity. RM10 and RL1 series fuses with high breaking capacity are usually used. When the short-circuit current is very high, RT0 and RT12 series fuses with current limiting function are recommended.

Self-resetting fuses use sodium metal as the melt, which is highly conductive at room temperature. When a short-circuit fault occurs in a circuit, the short-circuit current generates high temperatures, causing the sodium to vaporize rapidly. The vaporized sodium is in a state of high resistance, which limits the short-circuit current. When the short-circuit current disappears, the temperature decreases and the sodium metal restores its original good conductivity. Self-resetting fuse can only limit the short-circuit current, can not really break the circuit. The advantage is that there is no need to replace the fuse and it can be reused.
